Wes Anderson Picture
Artist Name: Wes Anderson
Artist Biography: Brooklyn native Wess Anderson (b. 11/27/64) first gained recognition for his work with Wynton Marsalis´ prolific mid-´90s septet. He can be heard extensively on the recently issued seven-CD mini box Wynton Marsalis Live at the Village Vanguard. Wess began studying music on piano; three years later his father, a drummer touring with Cecil Payne, introduced him to jazz via Charlie Parker, inspiring him to take up alto and change his musical pursuits, studying later with Frank Wess, Frank Foster and Charles Davis. After attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, he played with Betty Carter for two months before Marsalis discovered him in 1988. He has since recorded three albums as a leader; the first, Warmdaddy in the Garden of Swing, uses Wess´ nickname in a title that evokes his presence as an altoist who plays with fluid ease.
