Gary Smulyan (b. 4/4/56, Bethpage, NY) has gradually emerged as one of the top successors to the deep-toned hard-bopy baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. Gary began his studies on alto, sitting in with Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Knepper, and Ray Nance while in high school. He studied at SUNY-Postsdam (´74-´75) and Hofstra University (´76-´78) before beginning his professional career. He has played with Woody Herman (´78-´80), the Mel Lewis Orchestra (´80 (), the Mingus Epitaph Concert (´89), and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (´91 (). He has also freelanced since 1980 with Konitz, George Coleman, Lionel Hampton, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin, Tito Puente, and Clark Terry, among others. In the late ´90s, Gary started working with the Three Baritones Band and recording as a leader; to date, he has cut four albums for Criss Cross. |
