Artist Name: Rudy Rutherford
Artist Biography: Rudy Rutherford (b. 6/18/24), d. 3/31/95) was a journeyman clarinetist and Barton saxophonist who specialized in swinging. Rutherford blew bari for Lionel Hampton (´43-44) and Count Basie (´440´47) before joining up with Ted Buckner in Detroit (´47). After another early-´50s stint with Count Basie, Rutherford performed and recorded with trombonist Wilber De Paris (´59). During the ´60s, he led his own combos at Count Basie´s and other NYC area clubs. For the remainder of his career Rutherford worked with more great bandleaders, including Earl Hines in the mid-´70s and Illinois Jacquet in the ´80s-´90s. When he passed away in 1995, Rudy Rutherford had a string of musical accomplishments; his clarinet solo with Basie on 1945´s High Tide sums up his great artistry.
