Artist Biography: Son of pianist Raul Mascarenhas and singer Carminha Mascarenhas, Raul Mascarenhas belongs to the prestigious Brazilian saxophone tradition that boasts such notable players as Leon Gandelman and Ivo Perelman. Little known in the U.S., Mascarenhas rose to prominence in his native land through his association with legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil, with whom he has toured and recorded extensively. As a studio musician, Mascarenhas has appeared on innumerable Brazilian jazz, bossa nova, and pop records, including those of artists Caetano Veloso and Robertinho Silva. As a leader, Mascarenhas has performed at festivals in a conventional quartet, displaying impressive chops and impassioned sound.
