Artist Name: Pharoah Sanders
Artist Biography: Pharoah Sanders (b. 10/13/40), Little Rock, AR) earned his reputation as one of the most ferocious tenor saxophonists in jazz history for his contribution to John Coltrane´s 1965-66 group. After graduating high school, Sanders freelanced in San Francisco but soon moved to New York in 1962. After struggling in obscurity for two years, he made his recording debut for ESP and worked with trumpeter Don Cherry. With Coltrane, Sanders wrestled seething, violent, and ecstatic sounds from his horn, matching the leader´s intensity level and confounding critics. After Coltrane´s death in ´67, Sanders collaborated with vocalist Leon Thomas on a series of records for Impulse; the ´69 recording The Creator has a Master Plan was truly novel(a popular avant-garde record. Sanders has remained active throughout the years, exploring world music and standards, and, once in a while, playing with a fire that recalls his voice of old.
