Paul Winter |
| Artist Biography: |
Soprano and alto saxophonist Paul Winter (b. 8/31/39, Altoona, PA) came to prominence as the winner of a collegiate jazz festival at Notre Dame University in 1961. Columbia talent scout John Hammond was on hand and immediately signed Winterīs combo to a recording contract. On a State Department-sponsored tour of Latin America in 1962, Winterīs musical conception slowly began to change. By 1967, Winter abandoned the traditional jazz format in favor of a lineup that featured non-Western instrumentation. He thus became one of the world musicīs earliest champions, combining elements of African, Asian, and South American music with jazz. As Winter became more politically active and concerned with environmental issues, he joined Greenpeace and sought the integration of music with nature; since 1980 he has headed a non-profit organization based on increasing public awareness of musicīs relationship to spiritual and environmental health. |
