| Artist Biography: |
A young lion in the tradition of Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley, alto saxophonist Mark Gross (b. 2/20/66, Baltimore, MD), is a promising neo-bopper. Having picked up the alto at age 6, Mark studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston before beginning to freelance. He had invaluable apprenticeships with the organ-grinding Jack McDuff (´89) and the indestructible Lionel Hampton´s Orchestra (´89-´92); during these years he was a mainstay on the European festival circuit as well. Mark soon began to collaborate with the emerging musicians of his own generation, playing with the Harper Brothers (´92) and Delfeayo Marsalis (´93(), with whom he has recorded for Novus. Aside from playing clubs and touring, Mark has also taught music in the Brooklyn Public School System. |
