Joe Temperley |
| Artist Biography: |
Scotsman Joe Temperley (b. 9/20/29) earned his reputation as a player for his interpretation of Duke Ellington´s music and, more specifically, his evocation of the late Ellington baritone saxophonist Harry Carney. Nonetheless, Temperley has his own fine voice on the horn and actually started out recording on tenor with English bands led by Harry Parry (´49) and Jack Parnell. He switched to baritone for his long stint with Humphrey Lyttleton´s band (´58-´65) before moving to New York in 1965, working in the big bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, and Clark Terry. In 1974 he replaced Carney in Mercer Ellington´s Big Band; since then he has freelanced with the greats, including Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Doc Cheatham, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Working as a leader, Temperley has recorded mainly for the Scottish HEP label and in 1999, the centennial of Duke Ellington´s birth, he released a tribute, Double Duke. |
