Jimmy Heath Picture
Artist Name: Jimmy Heath
Artist Biography: The middle of three Heath brothers, Jimmy Heath (b. 10/25/26, Philadelphia, PA) had his first high-profile gigs playing alto sax with Howard McGhee (“47-“58) and the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band (“49-“50), where he earned the nickname ³Little Bird² because of his similarity to the sound of Charlie Parker. Switching to tenor in the early “50s, Heath developed a unique voice both on his instrument and as a composer; his originals include the standards ³C.T.A.² and ³Gingerbread Boy.² Increasingly active as a composer/arranger in the “60s, Heath wrote for the likes of Chet Baker, Milt Jackson, Clark Terry, and Billy Taylor while recording a string of impressive albums for Riverside. From “75-“82 Jimmy teamed up with Percy and Tootie in the Heath Brothers; since then he has remained active as a saxophonist, educator, and freelance arranger. His most recent recordings are for Landmark, Verve and Steeplechase.
