James Carter |
| Artist Biography: |
With his first recordings for DIW and Atlantic in the mid-´90s, James Carter (b.1/3/69) caused quite a sensation, playing in various jazz styles(from Dixieland to swing to bop to free(while maintaining his personal voice on the saxophone. Though the tenor is his main instrument, Carter demonstrates an impressive faculty on most reeds; his improvisations are always full of energy and the unexpected, with sudden shifts of genre to draw the listener´s attention; one moment he plays an agile bebop lick and the next he slap-tongues a gutbucket R&B roar. Picking up the saxophone at age 11, the prodigious Carter was gigging with Wynton Marsalis (´85) before he even graduated high school. In ´88, Carter joined Lester Bowie´s New York Organ Ensemble, touring and recording with the legendary trumpeter. He has since worked with Lincoln Center Jazz Band, Mingus Dynasty Big Band and Julius Hemphill in the late alto saxophonist´s opera, Long Tongues. Carter leads his own quintet and has the potential to become one of the greatest of his generation´s towering figures. |
