Artist Name: Haywood Henry
Artist Biography: Haywood Henry (b. 1/10/13, d. 9/15/94) was one of the great swing-era baritone saxophonists, on caliber with Harry Carney, for whom he occasionally substituted in the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In his hometown of Birmingham, Henry played his the ´Bama Street Collegians,˛ before moving to New York where he rejoined the band, now called the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, an ensemble in which he was a fixture until the early ´50s. An established session player, Henry appeared anonymously on over 1000 rock-and-roll records, many of which were hits, over a ten year span beginning in the late ´50s. Henry remained active until the late eighties, swingin´ all the while with Earl Hines (´69-´71), Sy Oliver´s Orchestra (´72-´80), The New York Jazz Repertory Company, and in Broadway shows.
