George Coleman |
| Artist Biography: |
Born March 8, 1935 in Memphis, TN, tenor saxophonist George Coleman enjoyed his highest visibility as a member of Miles Davis´ Quintet (´63-´64), although he left the band to be replaced by Wayne Shorter. Before joining up with Miles he played in his hometown with B.B. King (´55-´66), moving to New York in ´58, where he gigged with the progressive Max Roach Quintet and the funky Wild Bill Davis. After a brief period of inactivity in the early ´70s, Coleman has led his own groups for the past 25 years, recording for Timeless, Evidence, and Telarc, and proving his status and accomplishments as one of the instrument´s masters despite his lack of recognition. |
