George Adams |
| Artist Biography: |
Like his adventurous musical partner, pianists Don Pullen, George Adams (b. 4/29/40, d. 11/14//92) was an original voice whose playing transcended generic boundaries. As a teenager in Covington, GA he was playing tenor sax in funky R&B groups, developing his impassioned voice at a young age. He gained his first professional experience backing legendary blues singers Jimmy Reed, Howlin“ Wolf, and Lightnin“ Hopkins in Atlanta. In 1968 Adams settled in New York, where he freelanced with Roy Haynes, Gil Evans, and McCoy Tyner among others. However, Adams had his first glimpse of fame through his fruitful association with Charles Mingus (“73-“76) in a group that featured Don Pullen, with whom he would later co-lead an engaging quartet. Towards the end of his life, Adams employed his big-toned, gospel sound with guitarist James ³Blood² Ulmer in Phalanx, recording extensively for DIW and Blue Note. |
