Dewey Redman |
| Artist Biography: |
An uncompromising avant-garde tenor, Dewey Redman (b. 5/17/31, Forth Worth, TX), began studying music on the clarinet at age 13 in a high-school marching band, an ensemble that included future free-jazz luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Charles Moffett, and Prince Lasha. After earning his masterīs degree in education from North Texas State, he relocated to San Francisco where he gigged with Wes Montgomery, Don Garrett, and young Pharoah Sanders. However, Redman is primarily associated with his childhood friend Ornette Coleman, in whose group he played for 8 years (ī67-ī74) as a perfect foil for the leaderīs alto. Redman also played with Charlie Hadenīs Liberation Music Orchestra, contributed to Keith Jarrettīs mid-ī70s quintet, and teamed up with Ornette alumni Don Cherry, Haden, and Blackwell to form the reunion band Old and New Dreams. An innovative player whose daring improvisations come clothed in a sweeping Lester Young-inspired tone, Redman has recorded as a leader for Impulse!, ECM, and Black Saint among others; his 1999 recording with Cecil Taylor and Elvin Jones, Momentum Space, was one of the yearīs most anticipated and critically acclaimed releases. |
