Clifford Jordan |
| Artist Biography: |
Clifford Jordon was a quintessential inside/outside player, a musician whose unique adaptability earned him respect in both traditional and avant-garde circles. Born September 2, 1931 in Chicago, Jordan gigged around the Windy City with Sonny Stitt, the adventurous Max Roach and several R&B groups before moving to New York in 1957. He arrived on the scene with a fully formed, blues-tinged and personal voice on his tenor sax, leading three albums for Blue Note and touring with Horace Silver (´57-´58), J.J. Johnson (´59-´60), Kenny Dorham (´61-´62), and again, Max Roach (´62-´64). Some of his strongest playing came during a legendary European tour with the Charles Mingus Workshop in 1964, where he shared frontline duties with the majestic, inimitable Eric Dolphy. Jordan was a visible member of the scene and important link to the music´s golden years. Some of his last recordings were for Criss Cross, DIW, Mapleshade and Milestone. |
