Big Nick |
| Artist Biography: |
Though born way back on August 2, 1921 (Lansing, MI) George Walker, otherwise known as ³Big Nick² Nicholas, is still a rousing musician, with his heavy vocal delivery and robust tenor playing. As a child, Nicholas studied piano and clarinet; later, as a teen, he played sax with brothers Hank and Thad Jones. Before joining the army in the early ´40s, Nicholas played with Earl Hines and Tiny Bradshaw. After his discharge, he worked with a number of noteworthy musicians, including J.C. Heard, Lucky Millander, Hot Lips Page, and Dizzy Gillespie. In the early ´50s, after developing his patented vocal style, Nicholas accompanied Timmie Rogers and Buck Clayton in their respective bands. Until 1984, little was heard from Big Nick; but, upon the release of his 1984 album Big and Warm (India Navigation), he once again stepped into the limelight. Though often working in obscurity, Nicholas has always been recognized as a highly individualistic singer and tenor man. |
