Benny Golson Picture
Artist Name: Benny Golson
Artist Biography: Born January 25, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, Benny Golson is an enduring talent as a composer, arranger, and tenor man. After attending Howard University (“47-“50), Golson joined Bull Moose Jackson“s R&B band (“51), where he worked with pianist Tadd Dameron, whose writing influenced him deeply. Golson played in Dameron“s own band in 1953, but he came to prominence both for his writing and tenor playing while with Dizzy Gillespie“s“ Globetrotting Big Band (“56-“58). Golson penned such standards as ³I Remember Clifford,² ³Stablemates,² ³Killer Joe,² and ³Blues March,² while working with Art Blakey“s Jazz Messengers (“56-“59) and co-leading the Jazztet with Art Farmer (“59-“62). Golson gradually drifted away from jazz and concentrated more on orchestral scores for TV and film. Golson reemerged on the jazz scene in 1977, playing with a tone more hard-edged and blustery than before. To date, he has been recording regularly for Timeless, Arkadia, and Dreyfus, showcasing his distinctive melodies, evocative arrangements, and muscular tenor playing.
