| Artist Biography: |
Antonio Hart (b. Baltimore, MD 9/30/63) took up the alto at age 7, eventually studying classical saxophone at Baltimore School of the Arts for four years and attending Berklee College of Music, where he studied with jazz instructors Andy McGhee and Billy Pierce. Hart first gained recognition for his work with Roy Hargrove, with whom he toured for a few years during the early ´90s. Hart cites Cannonball Adderley and Gary Bartz as his main influences, and in 1997 he etched his name permanently in the annals of hard-bop saxophone tradition when he toured with Phil Woods and Vincent Herring in Alto Summit. Hart formed his own group in the mid-´90s and can be heard on his many recordings as a leader for Novus and GRP. He has absorbed their styles and incorporated them with his own sound to create mature music conversant with hard-bop tradition. |
